JAKARTA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia deployed over 14,000 policemen and soldiers for the security of the 18th ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, police and military said here on Friday.

The security guards were dispatched at the venue of the summit, the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), airports, hotels where the delegates stay, routes and other places, coordinator of the operation named only Jarno said.

"Terror act is one of the main threats that we have predicted based of the latest situation," he said at the venue of the summit.

The officer said that 6,130 policemen have been deployed during the regional event.

As many as 1,450 police officers have guarded the compound of the Jakarta Convention Center, police officer Johanson Ronald, the coordinator of security at the venue of the summit told Xinhua.

Recently, Indonesia has been hit by a series of terrorist acts, including terror attacks in form of bomb wrapped in a book package, suicide bombing in police station's mosque in West Java, plot to blow up gas pipe near cathedral church on outskirts of Jakarta during Easter and a finding of a bomb under a bridge which has been the route of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Osama bin Laden's killing by the U.S. troops added to the security concerns in anticipation of possible backlash by terrorists.

"So we must boost our vigilance and never to underestimate every possible threat," said Jarno.

Helicopters, special vehicles for possible emergency situation, water canons, dogs and horses were among the facilities used to support the authorities in carrying out their work, said Jarno.

Head of states of ASEAN countries started to arrive in Jakarta on May 6 and May 7 for discussion on Saturday and Sunday.
