Indonesia's proposals receive good response from ASEAN

05-06-2011 15:27 BJT

JAKARTA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Association of the South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is set to agree to immediately draft the bloc's common platform on regional and global issues as proposed by Indonesia after ASEAN senior officials approved the idea, local media reported Friday.

Officials also agreed Thursday with statement by the summit chair Indonesia on mechanisms to fight people trafficking within the region.

As the region faces imminent threats of internal conflicts such as the Cambodian-Thai border dispute, regional officials also agreed to issue a joint declaration on peace and reconciliation among member states.

The declaration will be followed by the establishment of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation aimed at enhancing regional security and solving disputes among ASEAN member states in a peaceful manner.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry Director General for ASEAN Cooperation Dajauhari Oratmangun said member states were welcome of the joint statements regarding all three proposals.

ASEAN leaders will then discuss the issues at their summit on Saturday and Sunday.

Regarding the creation of a common platform for regional and global issues, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said earlier in an interview with The Jakarta Post that Indonesia believed ASEAN must set a new target, namely how the ASEAN community could be cohesive and have a greater global role, promoting a more cohesive ASEAN view on global issues.

Djauhari said reports of cooperation with dialogue partners such as China, the U.S. and Japan were also well-received and seen as being "on the right track".

He added that Indonesia also measured the progress made on the three pillars of ASEAN: political and security, economic, and socio-cultural cooperation. He said the ministerial meeting on Friday would also discuss the possibility of Myanmar's chairing of ASEAN and accepting Timor Leste as a new member.
