Nikkei plunges 1.45 pct on stronger yen, Wall Street tumble

TOKYO, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Nikkei plunged Friday on the yen's surge and Wall Street's tumble during Japan's three-day national holiday.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 145.00 points, or 1.45 percent, from Monday to 9,859.20. Stock markets were closed from Tuesday through Thursday in Japan for national holidays.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 9.05 points, or 1.05 percent, to 856. 50.

On the First Section, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones 957 to 577, with 131 others remaining unchanged.

Trading volume on the main section rose to 1,911.68 million shares from Monday's 1,834.03 million. Turnover reached 1,394.2 billion yen (17.34 billion U.S. dollars).
