Senior U.S. diplomat in Brazil for talks on cooperation

BRASILIA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Under Secretary of State William Burns arrived in Brazil on Wednesday for a series of discussions with local authorities to continue the dialogue initiated in March when U.S. President Barack Obama visited the South American country.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia, Burns had already scheduled a meeting with Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Fernando Pimentel.

The meeting is aimed to advance the joint work in areas such as combating racial discrimination, promotion of science and technology, environmental protection, support for Haiti and Africa, as well as incentives for projects in education and culture, democracy and human rights.

In a statement, the U.S. embassy emphasized the level of cooperation that has marked bilateral relations.

"President Obama's visit to Brazil in March highlighted the depth of the relationship between the United States and Brazil as equal partners, based on shared values and principles and characterized by the ties of friendship that have brought our nations closer," said the statement.

The ministerial level meeting of the Global Partnership Dialogue (GDP),

launched during Obama's visit, will take place in Washington on June 1. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota and other officials are expected to attend the meeting.
