New contract for Spain international Martinez

05-12-2011 14:33 BJT

MADRID, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Spain international midfielder Javi Martinez this Wednesday signed a new contract with Athletic Club Bilbao to keep him at the club until the end of June 2016.

The player confirmed the news on his Twitter account after the story appeared in the Spanish press during the afternoon.

The 22-year-old Martinez, who joined Athletic from Osasuna when he was just 17 years old, has signed a two year extension to his current deal which was due to expire in June 2014.

The contract sees Martinez's buyout clause increased to 40 million euros, meaning that adding on the corresponding taxes, any club wanting to buy him would have to pay over 60 million Euros.

Martinez has made 33 league appearances for the club this season, after forming part of the Spanish World Cup winning squad last summer. He has scored five goals from midfield.

Overall Martinez has made 168 league appearances for Athletic, scoring a total of 19 goals. His performances had attracted attention of other clubs in both Spain and Europe, but the new deal means Athletic have assured the future of one of the key players.

Just last week the club extended the contracts of midfielder Carlos Gurpegui and defender Koikili Letxundi and is now working to tie down another key player and negotiations have already taken place with Spain international striker Fernando Llorente, whose current deal expires in 2013.
