Indonesian gov't, parliament agree on social guarantee agency bill

05-12-2011 16:20 BJT

JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government and parliament on Thursday finally agreed on the bill on National Social Guarantee Agency that will provide health access for all Indonesians, especially for the poor.

"We are talking about social insurance, not social aid. However, for the poor, the government will help," said Finance Minister Agus Martowardoyo in a session with parliamentary special committee that was attended by seven ministers.

Minister for Manpower and Transmigration Muhaimin Iskandar said that in principle, the government and the parliament have reached "a proximity point".

"We hope that this could be followed up in the next meetings," said Iskandar.

Minister for State-Owned Enterprise Mustafa Abubakar said that the government and the parliament hope that the bill could be completed before the end of parliamentary session.

"Pessimism that overshadowed us on April 7 (when the previous session on the bill was discussed) has turned to be optimism. And now, we intend to finish the bill before the end of parliamentary session period," said Abubakar. Social Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri said that with the same spirit, the government and the parliament were hoping that the bill could become a law soon.

"We only have 43 days left before this parliamentary session period ends. Hopefully, we can enact the bill to become a law that will be enjoyed by all people. If we couldn't pass the bill, it will disappoint all Indonesians," said Al Jufri.

Nizar Shahab, head of the parliamentary special committee on the bill who chaired the session, said that the committee has received and listened to a problem inventory submitted by the government related to the bill.

"And furthermore, we will discuss it in a schedule agreed by the parliament and the government, so that the bill becomes a law, " said Shahab.
