NINGBO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Twenty officials from eight French-speaking African nations began courses on maritime law enforcement Thursday in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The 20-day program will be held primarily at the China Maritime Police Academy based in Ningbo City. The African officials come from eight nations including Algeria, Gabon and Cameroon, according to the college sources.

Specialists and professors of maritime law will give lectures that cover the investigation of maritime crimes, emergency rescue, and methods to counter armed hijacking of vessels and piracy.

The officials will also visit maritime law enforcement agencies in Ningbo and Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong Province.

The project marks the first time China has provided French-speaking

African nations training on maritime law enforcement.

The Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Public Security commissioned the college to lead the project.
