China's eco-protection policies safeguard Tibet's unique environment

05-19-2011 15:33 BJT Special Report:This is Tibet |

In the past 60 years, China's central government has carried out a series of effective policies to protect the unique environment of Tibet Autonomous Region.

As early as Tibet's peaceful liberation in 1951, the central government organized a panel to survey, evaluate Tibet's land, forests, grassland, water conservancy and mineral resources, and further put forward scientific suggestions on its development, ushering in an era of scientific understanding, utilization and protection of Tibet's environment.

Hereafter, Tibet's ecological improvement and environmental protection have seen great progress with the development of Tibet's modernization.

The State Council, China's Cabinet, outlined a national ecological improvement guideline and environmental protection guideline in 1998 and 2000 respectively.

The outlines gave priority to Tibet's ecological improvement and environmental protection by listing the thaw regions on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as one of the eight national key ecological improvement zones and drawing up specific plans for its development.

In accordance with the two guidelines, the regional government of Tibet formulated a guideline for the improvement of its ecological environment in 2000.
