Colombia finds bodies of 9 people abducted in April

05-24-2011 11:11 BJT

BOGOTA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of nine people kidnapped in April by members allegedly belonging to a drug trafficking organization have been found in a mass grave in northwestern Colombia, authorities said Monday.

The police chief of the north-central province of Antioquia, Jose Acevedo, said that information provided by a detainee "took us to the sector of Sopetran, where two days ago we found the nine bodies in the three graves."

The nine people were part of a group of 10 people who were abducted from the house in which they were staying in the vacation area of the Sopetran municipality near Colombia's second largest city of Medellin.

Forensic tests are yet to confirm the identity of the victims, but it is almost certain that the remains belong to the group of the people kidnapped in late April, Acevedo told the local radio station Caracol.

"Everything indicates that they are part of this group. One person is still missing but we must wait for the full identification of those to determine which one is not there," he said.

The police commander said that initial evidence based on how the crime was carried out points to an internal battle of rivalry in the major Colombian drug cartel "The Envigado Office," which in recent years also has been increasingly involved in organized crime.

The Envigado cartel was initially founded in 1980 by the infamous late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
