Chinese General Chen Bingde meets Swedish Supreme Commander Goranson

STOCKHOLM, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China, General Chen Bingde Friday held talks with Sverker Goranson, Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces at the headquarters of the Swedish Armed Forces in Stockholm.

In recent years, Chinese and Swedish leaders have frequently visited each other and the two countries have kept close exchanges and coordination in international affairs and bilateral cooperation and exchanges in various fields have been deepening, said Chen, who is also a member of the Central Military Commission.

Chen said although China and Sweden are at different stages of development, there is no fundamental conflict of interest between the two sides. Good relations have brought real benefit to the peoples of the two countries.

He hoped that the two sides can push forward bilateral relations into a higher level on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

Military relation is an important part of bilateral relations, strengthening exchanges between the two militaries is conducive to improving mutual understanding and trust and to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation, Chen pointed out.

There is great potential and prospect to develop military relations between the two countries. China is willing to make joint efforts with Sweden to consolidate cooperation and push the friendly military relations forward to a new stage, Chen stressed.

Goranson said that China is an important country in the world and is playing an increasingly important role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development.

In recent years, the relations between the two militaries have developed smoothly, the content of exchanges is expanding, Goranson said.

Cooperation between Swedish and Chinese militaries is compatible with the fundamental interest of the two countries and conducive to maintaining world peace and stability, Goranson noted.

The two sides also exchanged ideas on defense policies, transformation of military construction and regional situation. They agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation in anti- pirates operations in the Gulf of Arden.

Chinese Ambassador to Sweden Lan Lijun and Zhang Haiyang, political commissar of the PLA Second Artillery Corps, were present at the meeting.
