ZHENGZHOU, May 28 (Xinhua) -- State Councilor Chen Zhili played games and talked with some village children left behind by their parents who are working in cities as transients, on the eve of the International Children's Day, in central China's Henan Province.

Chen visited the Henan Provincial Recreational Center for Women and Children in Zhengzhou City, where she talked with these left-behind village kids, nurses and teachers, to congratulate them on the festival, which falls on June 1.

"The Party and the government care about you and have taken measures to improve the environment for your living and study," said Chen during her stay with the kids.

She called on the children to study hard and become talented people in the future, so as to live up to the expectations of all those who have care about them.

"It is the responsibility of the whole society to give more care and love to the left-behind kids and help them grow up with joy and in good health," she stressed.

The state councilor also studied issues regarding women's employment and health in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, and Sanmenxia City in the western part of Henan.

According to official figures, 242 million farmers are now laboring in cities, leaving behind 58 million children at their rural homes. Many of these youngsters are staying with their grandparents.

The issue of left-behind village kids has drawn great concern from the public as these children face educational and psychological problems.
