The foreign participants, from America, Britain, France and South Korea, learned the rules and skills of playing Mahjong in their leisure time from local citizens.

At the moment, there are roughly 7,000 foreigners working and living in Xi'an.

Mahjong, which originated in China, is a set of 136 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols and usually played by four people. To play the game well, one needs skill, strategy, mathematical finesse and sometimes a certain degree of good luck. Sometimes people play Mahjong for gambling purposes.
