Germany defeats Uruguay 2-1 at soccer friendly

BERLIN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- German striker Mario Gomez and striker mate Andre Schuerrle sealed the deal against Uruguay at a friendly on Sunday at Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim, Germany.

The "Nationalelf" shocked the "Celeste" with only 19 minutes into the match with the opener through striker Mario Gomez although Uruguay staged a better start.

Gomez utilized a black out by Uruguay's defence to slot home from close distance. Germany doubled the lead at the 34th minute through youngster striker Andre Schuerrle who curled the ball into bottom right from penalty line.

After interval Uruguay was only able to shorten the score through Uruguayan midfielder Walter Gargano who exploited a tumble inside penalty area. It is the first friendly victory after the World Cup in South Africa 2010 for the German squad.

"The first half went well but in the second half we made too many mistakes so that Uruguay came back into play," German coach Joachim Loew said after the victory.

"We made too many mistakes that Germany has exploited. Against Germany, you have to utilize your opportunities to win," Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan said.

Germany faces Austria and Azerbaijan for Euro qualifiers in the beginning June.
