Gremio beats Atletico-PR 1-0

05-30-2011 09:44 BJT

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Playing on the road against Atletico-PR, Gremio won 1-0 on Sunday in the 2nd round of the 2011 Brazilian Championship.

The win marked Gremio's first of the tournament while Atletico-PR recorded its second straight loss.

The game's only goal was scored in the 13th minute. Off a free kick delivered from Lucio, defender Rafael Santos attempted to cut off the ball, but unintentionally directed the ball directly into the back of his own goal.

Despite the admittedly sloppy match, Gremio's head coach Renato Gaucho celebrated the win, claiming that it helped to forget last week's dismal performance in the tournament opener.

In the next round of play, Atletico-PR will travel to face Palmeiras on June 4. On the following day, Gremio will host Bahia.
