Two police arrested over violence in protest in Sri Lanka

06-01-2011 11:46 BJT

COLOMBO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two policemen have been arrested after President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a committee to look into Monday's violence at the export promotion zone at Katunayake, near the international airport.

Police and hospital sources said that over 200 people had received treatment for injuries suffered at the clash.

The export promotion zone remained closed on Tuesday and the closure was extended to Wednesday too.

The arrests of policemen came after a senior government minister condemned the police conduct during the demonstration, as employees were protesting the move to set up a pensions fund.

The protest drew a response from the government when it said that trade zone employees will be exempted from the fund.

Employees oppose the move to set up a new pensions fund as they prefer the existing provident and trust funds.
