Airports on high alert in 2 southern Indian cities

06-01-2011 15:41 BJT

NEW DELHI -- Indian authorities Wednesday sounded a high alert at two airports in the southern cities of Chennai and Bangalore after an e-mail followed by an anonymous threat call informing about the presence of bombs, said highly placed official sources.

"While the e-mail was sent to the Bangalore Airports Authority Tuesday evening, the threat call was received in the wee hours of Wednesday. All security personnel guarding the two airports have been put on high alert," said the sources.

Apart from checking all vehicles entering the two airports, security personnel have carried out extensive searches on some private airlines operating from the cities, the official said, adding that no suspicious items have been found yet.

"Efforts are on to trace both the e-mail and the phone call," said the sources.
