Toyota announces recall of Prius vehicles

06-01-2011 16:30 BJT

LOS ANGELES, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Electric power steering problems prompted a voluntary safety recall of approximately 52,000 Prius vehicles, the Toyota company announced on Tuesday.

The vehicles involving in the recall were produced from 2001 through 2003 and sold in the U.S. market, said Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., headquartered in Torrance, near Los Angeles.

The company said that it initiated the recall so as to replace the electric power steering pinion shaft attachment nuts.

If the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full-lock position, there is a possibility the nuts securing the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly may become loose, the company said in a statement.

If the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition overtime, the customer will gradually notice significant increased steering effort when making a left turn, according to the statement.

But Toyota did not say whether the technical problems had caused any accidents.

Toyota's dealers will install improved nuts that secure the pinion shaft at no charge to the vehicle owner, said the statement, adding that the repair will take approximately four hours depending upon the dealer's work schedule.

Owners will receive notification letters in early July, according to the statement.

Since late 2009, Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles worldwide due to various problems including sticky gas pedal that causes sudden acceleration, faulty fuel pipes and high-pressure fuel pumps.
