SUVA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama on Wednesday highly acknowledged China's commitment to improving and developing infrastructure in the island nation, saying China is a true friend of Fiji.

Bainimarama made the remarks while officially launching sealing works for the 15-kilometer Sawani Serea Road, which is funded through a 55 million Fiji dollars (31.4 million U.S. dollars) soft loan from China.

"The Chinese government is a true friend of Fiji helping us build a steady foundation for socio-economic improvement, advancement and empowerment. I am most appreciative of their contribution," Bainimarama said.

He highlighted the importance of the development of infrastructure "because it helped improve livelihoods of rural communities," saying the government "want all Fijians to not only become empowered but to rid themselves of the old ways of thinking. "

"We want modernization and the collaboration of all Fiji citizens as one nation, as one people and for Fijians socio- economic advancement," he added.

The Sawani Serea Road sealing project is being carried out by the China Gezhouba Group Company Limited (CGGC) which also opened another 15-Kilometer road upgrade project in Fiji's Sigatoka Valley last Friday.

Yu Changsheng, Vice President of the CGGC, said they were honored to be awarded the contract for the project, promising to conduct the job on time with the best quality.
