Mexican president calls for new police paradigm

06-03-2011 09:55 BJT

MEXICO CITY, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday called for the establishment of a new policing paradigm in order to better confront Mexico's powerful drug cartels and improve security in the country.

"Today, Mexicans are on the the correct path of having a Federal Police that is more professional, better recruited and better prepared for confronting organized crime and insecurity in Mexico," Calderon said on Thursday at a ceremony held in a Mexico City police compound.

Calderon had declared June 2 as Day of the Police. The President also called on Mexican youths, especially students in the country's public and private universities, to consider joining the ranks of the 35,000-strong Federal Police.

In his address, made in the presence of high-level public security officials and senior military officers, Calderon mentioned the efforts of his government to improve law enforcement in a country where the police often have poor reputations for corruption and involvement in inappropriate conduct.

He said the federal government has invested 480 million U.S. dollars in new police infrastructure and equipment.

"We have taken the task of transforming the Federal Police so that it is worthy of the Mexican's confidence," Calderon said.

Noting "there have been important progress" in the fight against organized crime, he said "there is still much to do" in order to reestablish citizen confidence in the country's police forces.

Calderon has proposed establishing 32 state police forces with expanded powers in an effort to fight corruption and links to organized criminal groups that is common in the country's poorly trained and poorly paid municipal police forces.
