BEILUN, China, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China outclassed the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-17) on Thursday in the opening round of the second leg of China international women's volleyball tournament.

The Dominicans, who lost 25-22, 26-24 and 25-17 to the hosts last week in the first leg of the four-team invitational which also feature Cuba and the Netherlands, put up more of a fight Thursday night, leading as many as seven points midway in the second set before succumbing.

"I am a little sad, because we lost. But we did better than the last match we played against China," said Dominican head coach Marcos Kwiek. "I hope we can continue to improve."

Prisilla Rivera Brens was the leading scorer with a game-high 15 points, but it was not enough to bring victory for the Dominicans. Yang Junjing, a new face on the Chinese squad, paced the team with 12 points and Hui Ruoqi added eight points.

"The Dominican Republic played a good match, but we were prepared for a tough battle," said Chinese head coach Yu Juemin.

After dropping the first set by a narrow margin, the Dominicans rebounded strongly in the second and raced into an 8-3 lead as the Chinese were error-prone in reception and passing.

The Dominicans looked set to take one set back when they were up at 21-14. But Yang then inspired an 8-1 run as China clawed back to level at 22-22 before Hui won two straight points to clinch the set.

Earlier in the afternoon,Cuba beat the Netherlands in straight sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-21 ) for the second time in less than a week. Cuba had defeated the Netherlands 3-0 last Saturday in the first leg of the four-team round-robin event.
