Air traffic suspended in Argentina

06-13-2011 11:04 BJT

BUENOS AIRES, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Argentina's air traffic was suspended Sunday night for "safety reasons" because of the ash cloud spewed by the Puyehue volcano in Chile, said the country's aviation authorities.

Since 8:00 p.m. (2300 GMT) Sunday, airports across Argentina have been closed one after another in line with the suspension order, said the Civil Aviation National Administration (ANAC).

Meanwhile, Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral, two of the nation's major airlines, said domestic flights, as well as "arrivals at and departures from Rio de Janeiro, San Pablo, Santiago de Chile and Lima" were all grounded.

The Puyehue volcano, about 2,240 meters high, is located in the Andes Mountains in southern Chile and erupted eight days ago for the first time since 1960, spewing large quantities of ash, which has floated to central Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil.

More than 1,000 flights have been canceled in Argentina during the last seven days.
