Vietnam on Monday began live-fire naval drills in the South China Sea, a naval officer said, amid escalating tensions with Beijing over a long- simmering territorial dispute.

"The first live firing by the Vietnamese Navy began at 8:00 a.m. (0100 GMT)" and will last until 12:00 p.m., said the officer, based in the central city of Danang, who declined to be named.

He said the exercise is taking place around Hon Ong island, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) off Quang Nam province in central Vietnam.

A second phase of live firing lasting about six hours is due to start at 6:00 p.m. (1100 GMT), part of what the foreign ministry has described as "routine annual training".

"I can't reveal the number of Vietnamese ships mobilized for these exercises but there will be gun fire, not missiles," said the officer.
