70% of arms seized in Mexico come from U.S., report says

HOUSTON, the United States, June 13 (Xinhua) -- More than 70 percent of arms seized in Mexico originated in the United States, according to a U.S. congressional report released on Monday.

"Congress has been virtually moribund while powerful Mexican drug trafficking organizations continue to gain unfettered access to military-style firearms coming from the United States," said Dianne Feinstein, one of the three U.S. senators who issued the report.

New ATF (the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) data "reveals that more than 70 percent of firearms recovered at crime scenes and traced by Mexican officials actually originated in the United States," she said.

The report proposes legislation to further restrict weapon purchases at guns shows, enforce the existing ban on imports of military-style weapons, and reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.
