Philippine gov't rejects to lift state of emergency in Mindanao

06-20-2011 16:34 BJT

MANILA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government has no plan yet to lift the state of emergency in the southern province of Maguindanao, a senior government official said on Monday.

Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ricky Carandang said that the situation in the area does not warrant yet the lifting of the state of emergency.

"There are still some groups roaming around. The situation is not completely under control," he said.

But he added that there was an agreement with the local officials of Maguindanao that if they see it fit to lift the state of emergency then President Aquino will do it.

"But right now, the feedback from the people in Maguindanao is for the state of emergency to remain," Carandang said.

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Proclamation No. 1946 declaring Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat provinces and Cotabato City under a state of emergency in the aftermath of the November massacre in 2009, which involved the death of 58 individuals, mostly journalists.

A group led by former Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao governor Zaldy Ampatuan, one of the suspects in the killings, petitioned the Supreme Court to nullify the state of emergency in the area. However, the high court junked the petition.
