Australia's Brisbane Airport terminal evacuated after security screening failure

07-04-2011 15:17 BJT

BRISBANE, Australia, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal was evacuated on Monday morning following a security screening equipment failure, the country's third busiest airport said.

About 1500 people were evacuated from the terminal on Monday after an error in a screening machine at the security checkpoint was found in the domestic terminal about 11.15 a.m. (local time), a Brisbane Airport spokeswoman said.

A number of passengers went through the screening process without being properly cleared because of the screening equipment failure.

"For safety reasons we decided to evacuate everyone out and re- screen them all again," she said.

The airport said there was no security breach by any passenger but planes from all major airlines were affected and delays of around 45 minutes were expected.

The cause of the screening system error is under investigation.
