Uganda table tennis team to train in China ahead of All Africa Games

KAMPALA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Uganda is working around the clock to secure sponsorship to enable them send the table tennis team to train in China in preparation for the forthcoming 2011 All Africa Games to take place in Maputo, Mozambique.

Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) organizing secretary Paul Mutambuze who is also a coach player on the team told Xinhua Sunday that although the team comprises about seven players, they want to send about four players to get the exposure with the best players in the world in China.

"We need to get back to our winning ways to bag medals at the All Africa Games like we did in 1999 during the one in South Africa and the best way is to prepare well with the best players," explained Mutambuze.

According to Mutambuze, who once played professional table tennis in Italy, their opponents like Algeria, Congo, Angola and South Africa have already sent players to train in China ahead of the All Africa Games.

Mutambuze emphasized that having the players get the extensive training will do wonders for them interms of winning medals for the country. Mary Musoke was the last Ugandan table tennis player to win a medal at the All Africa Games in 1999 when she bagged a bronze.

Uganda is expected to send a contingent of 163 athletes for the 2011 All Africa Games who will feature in athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, canoeing/kayak, chess, cycling, football, lawn tennis, Netball, Paralympics, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tae-kwon-do and weightlifting.
