MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Russia's manned bathyscaphe "Consul" has been tested Monday, which was called by officials as a success.

The test was conducted in the Northern Atlantic where the vehicle, with three crew members aboard, dived to the depth of 6,270 meters, defense ministry officials told reporters.

The bathyscaphe will be put into service of the Russian navy after all the tests are completed by the year's end, they added.

The vehicle, built in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, is capable of carrying a load of up to 200 kg and conducting underwater rescue missions as well as various technical tasks under the sea.

Weighing 26 tons and 8.4 meters long, "Consul" can carry two to three crew members and remain under water for up to 12 hours.
