CARACAS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez expressed Sunday his optimism toward a full recovery from cancer after completing his first session of chemotherapy in Cuba.

The 56-year-old Venezuelan leader spent most of the last month in Cuba, having a pelvic abscess removed on June 10 and an unspecified cancerous tumor cut out on June 20.

He returned to Venezuela on July 4 and resumed official duties while continuing his cancer treatment.

Chavez headed for Cuba again on July 16 for his second round of cancer treatment including chemotherapy and was back home on Saturday night.

Once back in Venezuela, Chavez joined national celebrations of the birth of Simon Bolivar, a military and political leader in the country before his death in 1830.

Chavez said during the celebration that the first phase of chemotherapy was difficult and hard but he was ready for a second round of chemotherapy in Cuba to eliminate the risk of malignant cells.

Chavez said he appreciated supports from Cuban leader Raul Castro, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Cuban people and Cuban medical system during his fight against cancer.

He promised to strictly follow medical instructions and orders from his doctors to limit his agenda.
