SEOUL, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of babies born in South Korea grew for the 15th straight month in May amid the government' s persistent efforts to boost the country's low birthrate, a report showed Monday.

According to the report by Statistics Korea, the number of babies born in May stood at 39,100, up 5.7 percent or 2,100 over the same month last year.

The number of birth has been on the rise since March last year after suffering a 24-month consecutive decline, the report showed.

South Korea has been struggling with its low birthrate. It has one of the lowest birthrates in the world at 1.22 children per woman in 2010 while the average rate of the OECD countries is 1.74.

Meanwhile, the number of death totaled 21,600 in May, up 0.5 percent or 100 from a year earlier, according to the report.
