Obama-Dalai Lama meeting: farce

07-25-2011 16:34 BJT

It is no news that U.S. presidents met with the 14th Dalai Lama. Since 1991, when George H. Bush met with him, each U.S. president later had met with him in different ways. Up to date, the Dalai Lama has been met by four US presidents from both Democratic and Republican parties for 12 times.

Not only do the Chinese people feel indignant, but also bored about the trick the US had played repeatedly.

China is very clear about its position on Tibet. It opposes any leader of any foreign country to meet with the Dalai Lama in whatever form. The reason why the US dares to do so demonstrates that it has never given up playing the card of "using Tibet to sabotage China". And the US also shocked the world by showing how it could make use of and let go of the so-called "Tibet issue" according to its own wishes.

When the US needs China's support, it stresses that it recognize Tibet is part of China and opposes "Tibet independence". The US presidents not only firmly refused to meet with the Dalai Lama, and even avoided touching the topics of "human rights" and "freedom". Conversely, when its interests are threatened, the US government will immediately shift its stance to the other side by interfering in China's internal affairs under the disguise of concerning about Human Rights in Tibet..

Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama no doubt aimed to solicit more votes in the presidential election in 2012 and appeal to more congressmen who support the so-called "Tibetan government-in-exile". However, American voters care more about their own interests in the economic crisis. Without any endeavor to boost the domestic economy and increase employment opportunities, it is really unwise for Obama to worsen the China-US relationship by meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Since Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the US in 2011, the China-US relations has entered a new phase of "mutual respect". Recently, the China-US military exchanges also indicated a right direction for the two countries' cooperation. However, all the efforts went in vain due to Obama's meeting the Dalai Lama.

On the other hand, it seems ridiculous that the 14th Dalai Lama who has announced to "retire" met a politician in a political place in the name of a religious leader.

At the end of May this year, the 14th Dalai Lama announced that he would only engage himself in "spiritual affairs" while transferring his political power to Losang Sumgon, who was newly elected as the "chief Kalon" of "the Tibetan government-in-exile" in April. However, at the beginning of July, he took "chief Kalon" with him when he "restricted himself to religious activities" in Washington, DC. We can see that his "retirement" is only a publicity stunt to attract the international media's attention. Continuing to carve up China in the cloak of religion is his true aim.

It was impossible for the Dalai Lama who believes in Buddhism and Obama, a Christian believer to talk about religion in the White House. So it is obvious that their real purpose is to take what they want from each other for their own political scheme.
