Serbian parliament adopts declaration to stress protection of Kosovo Serbs

BELGRADE, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In response to the recent escalation of violence in northern Kosovo, the National Assembly of Serbia on Sunday convened a special session of parliament, reconfirming its commitment to the protection of Serb population, reported Radio Television Serbia.

A declaration, adopted after several hours of debate, called on institutions in Kosovo to accept the realities on the ground and for actions to be framed within the context of the UN Resolution 1244.

The resolution was adopted by the UN Security Council in 1999 in the aftermath of NATO bombing, which established a provisional government under UN administration in Kosovo.

In its preamble, the Resolution 1244 recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia.

During the debate in parliament, it was noted that some international missions in Kosovo were violating the status-neutral framework of Resolution 1244. In 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence and has been recognized by most of the EU countries and the United Sates.

The Serbian declaration also called upon the international community to condemn unilateral acts, such as those taken by the government in Pristina in recent days, that threaten peace, stability and the possibility of compromise.

Two border crossings with Serbia were closed after Pristina attempted to assert direct control, resulting in the death of a police officer.

The declaration underscored the protection of the lives, property and freedom of all residents of Kosovo, in particular the Serb and other non-Albanian populations.
