Mubarak's trial could be postponed rather than transferred: Judge

08-01-2011 09:04 BJT

CAIRO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Mubarak's trial could be postponed if his health does not allow him to stand the trial in Cairo, but will never be transferred to Sharm el-Sheikh, Head of the Cairo Criminal Court Ahmed Refaat said here Sunday.

Refaat made this remark through a telephone interview with Egyptian Television, hailing the trial as a historical event in Egyptian history since it is the first time for a former president and a former minister to stand trial before local civil judges.

"The Criminal Court would rather prefer a delayed trial in Cairo rather than a transferred one in Sharm el-Sheikh," said Refaat.

He also believed that the trial will be a speedy one and the conclusion will not take a long time.

The ousted president who currently stays in a hospital of Sharm el-Sheikh, is due to stand trial starting on Aug. 3 on charges of killing demonstrators and abusing public office.
