JOHANNESBURG, July 31 (Xinhua) -- The South African Communist Party (SACP) celebrates its 90th anniversary on Sunday in the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont outside Durban.

The anniversary is a moment to highlight the role the SACP has played in the national liberation of South Africa and its contribution towards the reconstruction of the country since the democratic breakthrough of 1994.

"Our Party was the first non-racial political party and also through this helped pioneer non-racialism in the politics of our country and in society in general," said a statement issued by the SACP.

Founded in 1921, the SACP has been in the forefront of the struggle against imperialism and racism, in partnership with the Tripartite Alliance consisting of the ANC and the Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU).

"The SACP and its alliance partners had played a huge role in the attainment of freedom in South Africa. And the task is to ensure that we achieve economic freedom for our people," South African President and also the President of African National Congress (ANC) Jacob Zuma said in the celebration.

According to the statement, the SACP, with its membership surpassing 130,000, is the largest political formation after the ANC.

"The communist party today is faced with the challenge of attaining the required balance of its tasks and role in governance and continuing its leadership role in mass struggle as an independent organization," the statement said.

The SACP also vows to fight all forms of corruption, both inside and outside the ranks of the alliance and the state.

Leng Rong, a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Party Literature Research Center of the CPC Central Committee, attended the celebration events as the CPC representative.

According to the South Africa Press Association (SAPA), the occasion was attended by COSATU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and President Sdumo Dlamini, SACP General Secretary Blade Nzimande, Young Communist League General Secretary Buti Manamela and KwaZulu- Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize. Guests also include those from countries such as Portugal and Lesotho.
