JAKARTA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Speaker of the House of Representative Marzuki Alie on Monday defended his controversial statements on corruption, saying that as a public official, he has to make a breakthrough to fight the crime.

Alie said that what he has stated on Friday and widely criticized was just a thought contribution that needs to be discussed, not to be judged. "If my opinion was different with others and consequently I was judged with other experts' opinion, then there wouldn't be no more different opinion from public officials," he said. According to Alie, he was concerned with the phenomenon.

"Big ideas would not emerge if our democratic situation is still like this," he said. He also urged media to report public officials' statements fairly, not just cutting certain parts for reportage interest.

He said that sometimes, an opinion is regarded abnormal by other people.

"But for me, as long as the opinion is for the country's interest, it is not abnormal," he said.

On Friday, Alie proposed his ideas to combat corruption in which he is optimistic that Indonesia will free from corruption by the next 5 years.

He said that there should be no cash transaction above 1 million rupiah (about 117.675 U.S. dollars), adoption of reversal burden of proof and 'purifying' of dirty money. But, before they are adopted, all dirty money is allowed to enter the country but with tax attached.

Ali also said that that the powerful Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) should improve its performance in combating corruption.

"If there is no credible leader in the commission, why should be have this agency," he said.

The statement was widely translated as his desire to dismiss KPK.
