08-01-2011 14:53 BJT

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and three others were injured in a blast that took place Monday morning at a fruit market in the Hazaar Ganji area of Quetta, capital city of Balochistan Province in southwest Pakistan, reported local Urdu TV channel Samaa.

According to the report, the blast occurred at about 11:00 a.m. local time when a bomb planted in a garbage heap at a fruit market in the city went off. The people killed in the blast were two kids who were searching for food around the garbage heap, said eyewitnesses.

Police have arrived at the scene shortly after the blast was reported and the blast site has been cordoned off for search of other possible bombs. All the injured people have been shifted to nearby hospital.

No group has claimed the responsibility for the bomb attack.

Quetta has seen a series of sectarian-motivated attacks over the last couple of days. On early Saturday morning, at least 13 people were killed and five others were injured when some unknown gunmen opened fire indiscrimately at a passenger pickup carrying Shia Muslims on their way for work at a bus stop in the city.

A day prior to this, late on Friday night, seven Shia Muslims were reportedly shot dead in Quetta while they were heading to Iran to visit religious places. The banned extremist group " Lashkar-e-Jhangvi" had claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it was the revenge of the murder of a Sunni scholar Maulvi Karim who was killed in Quetta in firing on Thursday.
