1 soldier, 3 civilians killed, after gunmen attacks vehicle in Papua, Indonesia

JAKARTA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some unidentified gunmen attacked a vehicle in Abepura sub-district of Papua earlier Monday, killing one soldier and three civilians and badly injuring several others, a military officer said.

The unidentified gunmen armed with long rifles, big knifes and axes shot the vehicle at Nafri village at 03:15 a.m. local time that stopped the car, then they cleaved and axed the people on the car, military officer in charge at Jayapura military command Kenus Octo told Xinhua by phone. "One of the four deaths is a soldier, some other badly suffered from serious injury as the gunmen shot and cleaved them," he said.

The attack ended at around 04 : 00 a.m. local time, said Octo. All the injured have been treating in a general hospital at Abepura, he said.

Police are investigating the case, according to Octo.

Papua is homed by low-level armed separatist movement of Free Papua Movement which has been believed to frequently launching strikes, particularly in the U.S.-based giant mine of Freeport.
