WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle will attend the events in September marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the White House announced on Tuesday.

White House Spokesman Jay Carney said that the first couple will attend events in New York, Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania. On Sept. 11, Obama will "pay tribute to those we lost, honor the Americans who responded on that day, and who served in harm's way over the last decade," said Carney during a regular briefing.

In addition to the first couple, Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in an event on Sept. 10 at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the planes hijacked by terrorists ten years ago crashed.

In all, over 3,000 were killed in terrorist attacks on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Terrorists hijacked passenger planes and crashed them into World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Northern Virginia and Shanksville.
