Military, police chiefs from Colombia, Venezuela to discuss fight against rebels

BOGOTA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Colombian Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera announced Tuesday that Colombian and Venezuelan military and police will hold their first summit in two weeks to discuss combat against Colombia's guerilla groups.

Senior police, military and intelligence officers from both countries will hold the summit in the city of Cucuta to implement the agreement on fight drug trafficking signed in early April, he said.

Admiral Edgar Cely, commander of the Armed Forces of Colombia, said earlier that senior officials of the two countries had cooperated in the fight against drug trafficking and guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) of Colombia

Rivera said the Venezuelan government's cooperation in the fight against guerrillas and drug trafficking is very important and effective.

"We have received in public and private, repeated demonstrations from the Venezuelan government that they do not tolerate the presence of delinquents and criminals from Colombia in its territory and act with all diligence against them," the minister said.

Venezuela broke diplomatic and trade relations with Colombia after the government of then President alvaro Uribe accused it of hosting ELN and FARC rebels in its territory.

The two countries re-established diplomatic ties last August after a meeting between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and new Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
