Chile to form social development ministry

08-04-2011 10:31 BJT

SANTIAGO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chile's Chamber of Deputies approved a draft law Wednesday with an overwhelming majority to establish the Ministry of Social Development charged with setting and implementing policies concerning poverty reduction.

The new ministry would also take over part of the responsibilities of Ministry of Planning and Investment. It would evaluate investment initiatives which require national funding, determine their social profitability, and watch over the use of public money.

Its internal structures would include offices of social evaluation and social services and regional ministerial offices of social development.

The Social Evaluation Office will take charge of coordinating 360 sectorial programs and submitting the Social Policy Report to the parliament each year.

The law also agreed to set up the Inter-Ministry Committee of Social Development, which would advise the president on social policies.

Those who will sit on the committee are ministers from the ministries of social development, finance, education, health, housing and urbanism, labor and social security and women's national service, as well as the general secretary of the president.

Before it becomes law, the legal initiative will still have to go through a third constitutional step in the Senate, which will add amendments introduced by members of the Chamber of Deputies.
