LIMA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Anti-drug police have seized 800 kg of drugs and arrested 151 drug-traffickers at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Peru so far this year, the country's police announced Sunday.

The drugs seized at the international airport in the Latin American country's capital Lima were mostly cocaine, the national police said.

Usually hidden in baggage or human bodies, the drugs were destined for Europe, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Morocco, the police said.

Among the criminals detained, 41 are Peruvian nationals and 110 are foreigners, mainly from Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, the Netherlands and Portugal, according to the police.

Peru, together with Colombia and Bolivia, forms the notorious "Silver Triangle," historically known as a major drug production area in South America.

About 300 tons of cocaine are produced each year in the country, second only to its neighbor Colombia, but only an average of 10 percent is seized.

Most of the drugs produced in Peru are sold to Europe and Africa via Spain. Some are smuggled to its South American neighbors.

Peru has strengthened its cooperation with a number of countries including Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil in the anti-drug campaign.
