TEHRAN, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran defeated Japan in the 2011 William Jones International Basketball Tournament, the local English language Tehran Times reported on Monday.

Iran, the titleholder, was beaten by the Philippines in its opening match but overcame Japan 77-58 in China's Taiwan on Sunday, said the daily.

Iran will play South Korea on Monday at the Sinjhuang Stadium.

The Iranian team is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Championship scheduled to be held in Wuhan, China from September 15 to 25 where the winning finalist goes to the Olympics next year, said the report.

The William Jones Cup is an international basketball tournament held annually in China's Taiwan. It was named after Renato William Jones, a basketball promoter and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
