HANOI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam launched an action month for Agent Orange (AO) victims, starting on Sunday, to mark the 50th year since the AO/dioxin tragedy (Aug. 8, 1961).

According to the Vietnamese People newspaper on Monday, the launching ceremony, held by Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) in Hanoi on Sunday, attracted more than 10,000 attendants, who made a walk around the Thien Quang Lake in support of the AO/dioxin victims.

On the same day, in southern Ho Chi Minh City, members of the VRC and enterprises also joined in a walk to show their support for the AO victims and the disabled.

So far this month, various of activities were held in Vietnam in response to VRC's campaign, including a photo exhibition on the consequences of AO, a blood donation program with the aim to support the AO victims, and other community humanitarian events.

The report said VRC wants to call on local and international communities' further support for AO victims, both physically and spiritually through the campaign.

According to VRC statistics, more than 80 million litres of AO were sprayed over Vietnam by the U.S. army during 1961-1967. Around 4.8 million people were exposed to AO/dioxin, of which about three million were victims directly suffering from the deadly toxin.
