IRGC should lead economy through western sanctions: commander

08-08-2011 16:54 BJT

TEHRAN, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander said that the IRGC should press on with its leading role in economic front to steer the country through western sanctions and foreign pressure, the local English language Tehran Times daily reported on Monday.

Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Jafari made the remarks on Sunday during the induction ceremony of new commander of the Khatam al-Anbia Construction Base, the IRGC's construction contractor, said the report.

Abolqasem Mozafari-Shams has been selected as the new commander of the Khatam al-Anbia Construction Base, replacing Rostam Qasemi, who was recently appointed as the oil minister.

Jafari said that defending the country against military threats is not the IRGC's only duty, but it is also obligated to counter economic and cultural threats, according to the daily.

In his remarks, he praised the Khatam al-Anbia Construction Base for cushioning the impact of western sanctions and foreign pressure through helping the government to push ahead with its construction plans, saying that all officials have admitted that the country would have faced serious problems if the IRGC's construction arm had not played its key role.

Khatam al-Anbia Construction Base is the IRGC's major engineering arm and one of Iran's largest contractors in industrial and development projects. Khatam al-Anbia was created during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war to help rebuild the country, and has diversified over the years into companies dealing with mechanical engineering, energy, mining and defense.
