Two critically injured in explosion near Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two workers have suffered critical injuries as a powerful explosion rocked a commercial building and tore open part of its ceiling in northwestern Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The explosion was reported at 4:20 p.m.local time (2020GMT) at a 7,400-square foot (687 square meter) facility in Lake View Terrace, Sylmar, about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Two people, who were believed to be workers at the site, suffered severe and potentially life-threatening injuries during the incident, and they were transported to area hospitals. A third was treated at the scene, according to Humphrey.

The building belongs to an alternative energy firm that extracted hydrogen from water.

Fire crews found a pair of 3-foot (0.9 meter) -long compressed natural gas canisters inside the structure, but investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the blast.
