Universiade champion Qin eyes London Olympics

08-14-2011 17:28 BJT Special Report:2011 Shenzhen 26th Summer Universiade |

SHENZHEN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Judoka Qin Qian, who retained her Universiade title and won the first gold for China here on Saturday, is about to set out for the Paris World Championships to open on Aug. 23.

Qin, 23, edged South Korean Kim Na Young in the last 15 seconds of the women's over 78kg final at the Shenzhen Universiade.

"I am here mainly for a practice run. My goal is to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics," said Qin after the duel.

"I will then focus on the world championships. I must perform well to earn enough points for a ticket to the London Olympics," she said.

But Qin may meet her teammate and strong opponent, Tong Wen, the 2008 Olympic champion, in Paris.

Walking out of the doping scandal, Tong Wen returned to international arena in May 2011 and won the gold at the Moscow Grand Slam.

"We are teammates. It's good for any one of us to go," Qin noted.

After today's final, Kim, the silver medalist in 2010 Asian Games, said,"I am eager to win, but Qin is so strong and she is becoming one of the best judokas in the world."

Song Qitao, Qin's coach, said,"We have special tactics. She (Qin) tried to offset the opponent's advantages in height and force with flexibility."

Qin said she always kept calm down in the games, but was still unexpected for the tiara. "I didn't think much about it, and I just focused on performing normally."

The bronze medal was shared by Iaromka Svitlana from France and Kaya Belkis Zehra from Turkey.
