Google unveils new search feature, catalog shopping app

08-17-2011 16:14 BJT

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Google continued its newsy week on Tuesday, unveiling an improved search feature, an informative Chrome browser extension and a fresh catalog shopping app.

According to its official blog, Google launched several improvements to sitelinks, a list of links to specific sections of the site that may help users find shortcuts to their search task.

The search giant increases the maximum number of sitelinks per query from eight to 12. The sitelinks are full-size links with a URL and one line of snippet text, which are similar to regular search results and easier for users to find their target section.

The feature will be rolling out over the next few days in all supported languages in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox as well as IE 7 and above.

Google also introduced Google Related, a new Chrome extension and Google Toolbar which will enable users to automatically see interesting content relevant to the page they are viewing.

For example, if users visit a restaurant's website, Google Related will show a map, reviews, mentions from across the web and other similar eateries, said Google in a blog post.

Results will be displayed in a thin bar at the bottom of the screen and will remain minimized until the mouse is hovered over them. Through the options menu, the Google Related bar can be easily hidden for specific pages and sites.

Google Related is available for free in the Chrome Web Store and Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer.

The California-based company Mountain View also started to offer Google Catalogs, a free new app for tablet devices featuring digital versions of catalogs across fashion, beauty, home, kids and gifts.

A variety of brands, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn, Sephora and Williams-Sonoma, have partnered with Google.

Features include an in-store inventory check, and "collages" in which users can mix and match their favorite items from different catalogs. Purchases can also be made in the app.

Users now can download the app on their iPads in the App Store and the version for Android tablets will be rolled out soon.

On Monday, Google announced a blockbuster 12.5 billion-U.S. dollar acquisition of Motorola Mobility.
