British official says oil leak under control

08-18-2011 08:58 BJT

LONDON, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- A British official said on Wednesday that the oil leak in the North Sea was under control and had been greatly reduced.

"Based on the latest intelligence that I have, my view is that the oil leak is under control and has now been greatly reduced as validated by remotely operated vehicle footage and Government aerial surveillance flights," Hugh Shaw, a representative of the British Department of Energy and Climate Change said in a statement.

"The priority now and over the coming days is to completely halt any further leakage in what is a complex environment," he said.

The oil leak from the Gannet Alpha platform, about 180 kilometers east of Aberdeen, is the biggest in British waters in a decade.

The platform is operated by Shell UK Limited on behalf of itself and Esso Exploration and Production UK Limited.

Glen Cayley, Technical Director of Shell's exploration and production activities in Europe, also made a statement on Wednesday, saying the oil leak had been greatly reduced.

"We are making good progress in stopping the leakage from the flowline to the Gannet platform. As mentioned yesterday the flow rate currently stands at less than one barrel a day," he said.

Commenting on the influence of the leak, Shaw said: "Although the spill was deemed as significant, our information is still that the oil is not expected to reach the shore, and that it will be dispersed naturally."
