Peru police seize over 1 ton of cacaine

08-18-2011 09:19 BJT

Police in Peru said on Wednesday that they've seized more than a ton of cocaine in two raids during an anti-narcotics operation. The drugs would have a value of almost 60 million US dollars if they are sold in Asia or Europe. Police say, six people were arrested in the two operations.

Five of them were Colombian and one was Peruvian. The drugs were on their way to Turkey and Spain. On the same day, the Peruvian government said it has temporarily halted its coca crop eradication program. Peru has become the world's second biggest coca leaf producer, after Colombia.
