Fluminense trounce Figueirense 3-0 in Brazilian Championship

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Hosts Fluminense came to life in the second half and beat Figueirense 3-0 on Wednesday in the 17th round of play in the 2011 Brazilian Championship.

After a scoreless first half, the home team returned to the field and dominated the remaining halt of the match, scoring its first goal in the 48th minute when Edinho slammed in a great shot from the top of the penalty box.

Minutes later, Rafael Moura stole the ball from the Figueirense defense and drove the ball past a defenseless keeper Wilson to increase the lead.

Moura scored again in the 68th minute when he headed in a crossed ball from Mariano.

The win provisionally improves Fluminense to the seventh place with 24 points. In the 18th round of play the team will face cross-town rival Vasco da Gama on August 21.

Figueirense remains with 23 points and provisionally drops to ninth place with 23 points. In the next round of play the team will travel to play Corinthians on August 20.
