TRIPOLI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- As many as 31 Libyan government troops were killed and 42 others were captured in fighting in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, the pan-Arab al-Jazeera television reported on Sunday.

The television said rebels have already seized four eastern neighborhoods of Soug Jomaa, Arada, Tajourah, and al-Sabaa in Tripoli as a months-long uprising reached the Libyan capital.

Government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim asserted small clashes erupted in the capital, saying these clashes lasted 30 minutes after volunteers supporting Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi stopped the rebels.

In his eastern stronghold of Benghazi, rebel chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil said there are contacts with Gaddafi's inner circle.

"I expect a tragic end for him (Gaddafi) and his supporters," he told reporters.
